What Is a Rotary Screw Compressor? Working Principle, Advantages, and Industrial Applications

The Heart of Industry: Compressed Air

In modern industrial production facilities, compressed air is considered the "fourth essential utility" after electricity, water, and natural gas. The uninterrupted operation of pneumatic lines, robotic arms, automation systems, and production machinery depends on a reliable compressed air infrastructure.

Rotary screw air compressors are among the leading systems that meet this demand with high efficiency, durability, and continuous performance.

What Is a Rotary Screw Compressor?

Rotary screw compressors belong to the positive displacement compressor category. They contain two helical screw rotors rotating in opposite directions. These components, known as the male and female rotors, compress air to generate high-pressure compressed air.

Thanks to their continuous rotary motion principle, they provide reliable, stable, and long-term compressed air production for industrial facilities.

Key Advantages of Rotary Screw Compressors

  • Continuous Operation: Under appropriate operating and maintenance conditions, they can meet 24/7 production demands.
  • Low Vibration and Quiet Operation: They offer lower vibration and noise levels compared to reciprocating piston compressors.
  • High Energy Efficiency: In inverter-driven models, motor speed is adjusted according to air demand, potentially achieving energy savings of up to 35% under suitable conditions.
  • Minimal Oil Carryover: Thanks to high-quality separator filtration, oil carryover can be reduced to below 3 ppm in suitable systems.

How Does a Rotary Screw Compressor Work?

The operating principle of rotary screw air compressors is based on two intermeshing helical rotors that compress air as they rotate. Air drawn from the atmosphere passes through a filtration process before entering the airend. As the rotors turn, the volume of the trapped air gradually decreases while its pressure increases.

In oil-injected rotary screw compressors, specially formulated compressor oil provides sealing, reduces friction, and removes heat generated during compression. After oil separation and the necessary air treatment processes, the compressed air is delivered to the facility's compressed air distribution line.

Operating Stages of a Rotary Screw Compressor

  1. Air Intake Stage: Atmospheric air entering through the compressor intake valve passes through a micron-rated air filter before reaching the airend.
  2. Compression Stage: As the intermeshing screw rotors rotate, the volume of air trapped between the rotor profiles continuously decreases. As the air volume decreases, its pressure mechanically increases. In oil-injected systems, specially formulated compressor oil performs sealing and cooling functions.
  3. Discharge and Separation: The pressurized air-oil mixture is directed to the separator vessel. The separator system removes most of the oil from the compressed air. While compressed air is delivered to the outlet line, the separated oil returns to the airend after cooling and filtration processes.

Which Industries Use Rotary Screw Compressors?

Rotary screw compressors are widely used in industrial facilities where compressed air demand is continuous and uninterrupted production is essential.

  • Automotive and automotive supply industries
  • Textile and weaving facilities
  • Packaging and packing industry
  • Metalworking and machinery manufacturing
  • Plastic injection molding facilities
  • Food and beverage production
  • Pharmaceutical and chemical industries
  • Automation and pneumatic production lines
